Black and white darkroom orientation at The Centre

This black and white darkroom orientation is a three-hour, instructor-led session at The Centre in Toronto. You will make a black and white print from a developed negative of your own, and learn a repeatable, safe workflow you can use on your own afterwards. Groups stay small: a maximum of four participants, each working at their own black and white enlarger.

What you will learn

  • Set up the enlarger, handle and position a negative, compose and focus.
  • Make a test strip and read it to choose an exposure.
  • Control print contrast, then evaluate the result and make basic corrections.
  • Work through the print-processing sequence — developer, stop bath, fixer and wash.
  • Follow chemical-handling, equipment-care and end-of-session cleanup procedures.

What is included

  • Instructor-led orientation and hands-on practice.
  • One black and white enlarger per participant.
  • Darkroom chemistry during the class.
  • 25 sheets of Kentmere VC Select RC glossy black and white photographic paper per participant, 8 × 10 inches.
  • Use of the equipment and facility for the session.

What to bring

Bring one or more suitable developed black and white negatives you would like to print. A practice negative can be provided when needed.

Please also bring your own protective gloves, an apron or protective clothing, and eye protection for chemistry work. Graination does not provide participant PPE.

Access after the orientation

Taking this orientation does not by itself grant Darkroom Access. Two things are needed: you attend this orientation, and your acceptance of The Centre Facility Agreement is current. With both in place, the matching Access activates on your Graination account automatically.

Please read and sign the agreement before your class — it is on your account page at The Centre Facility Agreement. Signing early does not open a room early, and Graination may still hold Access where there is a safety reason.

Independent black and white darkroom sessions cannot be booked until that Access is active on your account. The Centre — Orientation & Access explains how orientation and access work across the rooms.

Booking and practical details

Choose an available black and white darkroom orientation date in the booking calendar on this page. Sign in before booking: each seat is personal and non-transferable, and one account books one seat. Guest checkout and multiple unnamed seats are not permitted. No existing Darkroom Access is required to take this orientation.

  • Duration: three hours.
  • Class size: maximum four participants.
  • Location: The Centre, BSMT-204 Spadina Ave, Toronto.

Participants must follow instructor directions and all posted safety, chemical-handling, equipment-care and facility rules.

Cancellation and rescheduling

You may cancel or request one transfer to another available course date up to 48 hours before the scheduled start time. A timely cancellation is eligible for a full refund of the course price and applicable tax to the original payment method. Use My Account → Bookings to cancel; contact Graination before the same deadline to request a transfer. Transfers are subject to availability and are not confirmed until Graination sends confirmation.

Cancellations or transfer requests received less than 48 hours before the scheduled start time, and failure to attend, are non-refundable and are not eligible for a complimentary transfer. Graination may review exceptional circumstances individually.

Arrival and late entry

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes early for check-in at The Centre, BSMT-204 Spadina Ave, Toronto. Safety instruction begins at the scheduled start time. Late admission is at the instructor's discretion and does not extend the course. A participant who arrives more than 15 minutes late, or who misses safety-critical instruction, may be unable to join or complete the course; the booking will then be treated as a late cancellation or no-show.

If Graination changes a course

Graination may need to reschedule or cancel because of insufficient enrollment, instructor unavailability, equipment or facility issues, safety concerns, or circumstances outside reasonable control. If Graination cancels a course or changes its date or time and the new time does not work for you, you may choose a transfer to another available date or a full refund of the course price and applicable tax.

Access assessment

The course fee pays for instruction, materials and participation; it does not purchase or guarantee Access. If Access is not approved after a fully delivered course, the fee is not refundable solely for that reason. Graination will explain the areas that require more practice and the available next steps.

These course-specific terms form part of the booking. Graination's Terms & Conditions and Returns & Refunds policy also apply. Nothing in these terms limits a right or remedy that cannot legally be excluded.

48-hour changes. Change or cancel up to 48 hours before the start. Inside 48 hours, changes and cancellations are not refundable or transferable.
