About this paper

ILFORD MULTIGRADE FB Warmtone Glossy is a useful choice when you want a photograph with a warm tonal character and a glossy presentation. Its traditional fibre support suits a workflow centred on the finished object: print, wash, dry, assess and prepare for display. Consider it for a selected image or a consistent series where the paper's character is an intentional part of the result.

Understanding the warmth

The image has a warm-black tone, while the paper base is warm white. Those qualities affect different parts of the photograph: the developed image carries the dark and middle tones, while the base contributes its colour to borders and the lightest areas. Look at both when choosing a mount or comparing prints for a portfolio. The final warmth also responds to processing, so keep your developer and method consistent across an edition.

Try this paper with portraits, still lifes or landscapes where warmer rendering supports your interpretation. A photograph does not need to look nostalgic to benefit from Warmtone; compare it with a neutral paper before deciding which colour relationship better serves the subject.

How the glossy surface reads

A glossy finish can give dark areas a strong visual presence, especially when the print is viewed without a distracting reflection. It is a promising option for images built around luminous highlights, dark clothing, deep foliage or architectural shapes. Display light matters: hold a fully dried sample at different angles and assess it in the intended frame or portfolio setting.

If glare distracts you from a photograph, compare the semi-matt version before adjusting the negative interpretation. Surface reflections, paper colour and exposure are different contributors to the viewing experience. Choosing between them is easier when you compare the same image at a similar print brightness.

Contrast control and test printing

Warmtone is a variable contrast paper, so compatible MULTIGRADE filters or a suitable enlarger head let you change contrast without changing paper grades. Use softer filtration to reduce contrast and harder filtration to increase it; establish exposure with a test strip after making the choice. The manufacturer's range extends from 00 to 5.

For a careful comparison, keep the image size and viewing light constant, and record the exposure and filter used for each version. A proof on another paper can guide your creative decisions, but make fresh tests on Warmtone before committing the final sheets. Use the ILFORD contrast-control guide for enlarger and filter details.

Processing and preparing the print

Handle unprocessed sheets under a suitable paper safelight, then use the recommended developer, stop, fixer and washing sequence. Fibre paper requires a longer washing and finishing commitment than RC. Reserve space and time for drying and any flattening before the final assessment or mounting.

Warmtone's processing deserves consistency because developer, fixing and washing choices can influence image colour. Follow the FB Warmtone technical sheet rather than substituting an RC routine. Select a compatible drying method: ILFORD warns that belt dryers and photographic blotters can stick to this paper.

Toning and lasting presentation

Its strong response to toning makes Warmtone attractive when you want to shape image colour after printing. Test the chosen toner on a spare print and judge the dry result before treating an entire series. Good fixing, washing and storage remain essential; toning is one processing choice, with effects that depend on the chemistry. See ILFORD's Warmtone Glossy information.

Compare the alternatives

Pick Warmtone Semi-Matt for a less glossy finish in the same family. Compare FB Classic Glossy when you want a neutral image and white base. Choose RC Deluxe Glossy for a quicker everyday printing workflow.
