Hyper-Res Scanning by Graination: The Future of High-Precision 35mm Film Digitization

Hyper-Res Scanning by Graination

Hyper-Res Scanning by Graination is our new high-precision film digitization pipeline engineered to capture maximum data integrity from 35mm film.
Built around industrial-grade optics, macro-optimized capture, and controlled illumination, this system extracts the full information content of each negative with repeatable, measurable performance.

What Is Hyper-Res Scanning?

Hyper-Res Scanning is Graination’s next-generation approach to camera-based film digitization. Every component — from optics to light source to mechanical stability — is selected for resolution, consistency, and scientific accuracy, ensuring results far beyond standard consumer scanning workflows.

Industrial-Grade Optics for Maximum Fidelity

At the core of our system is the LINOS inspec.x L 5.6/105, a macro lens engineered for precision imaging applications. We selected it for several critical reasons:

  • Large 82 mm image circle for flat, edge-to-edge coverage

  • Low distortion (<0.4%)

  • High micro-contrast for clean separation of fine grain

  • Uniform resolution across the entire frame

  • Lockable aperture for consistent reproduction

  • Exceptionally stable mechanical design

This lens reproduces film with a level of clarity, neutrality, and consistency that traditional camera lenses cannot match.

102 Megapixels of Clean, High-Dynamic-Range Capture

Hyper-Res is powered by the Fujifilm GFX100S II, a 102-megapixel large-format sensor known for:

  • extremely high dynamic range

  • exceptionally low noise

  • smooth tonal transitions

  • deep color depth

  • accurate rendering of fine grain structures

This combination ensures signal integrity, especially in dense shadows and subtle midtones where most scanning systems struggle.

Full-Spectrum LED Illumination (CRI > 95)

Film is illuminated by a custom array of twenty full-spectrum LEDs at 5000K. This specialized light source delivers:

  • perfectly even illumination

  • consistent, predictable spectral output

  • accurate color reproduction

  • minimal flare and scatter

  • no hotspots or banding

Because film responds differently to light than digital sensors, a controlled, uniform light source is essential for capturing true density and grain structure.

Engineered Mechanical Stability

Precision scanning requires mechanical consistency. Our scanning architecture includes:

  • a rigid, vibration-free frame

  • a precision-machined film gate for perfect flatness

  • reliable frame-to-frame alignment

  • stable geometry for distortion-free digitization

This eliminates micro-vibration, keeps the focal plane locked, and ensures that every scan is repeatable and measurable.

The Result: A Superior Digital Reconstruction

Hyper-Res Scanning delivers a digital file that is as faithful to the negative as technologically possible today. Expect:

  • maximum retained detail

  • uniform sharpness edge to edge

  • clean, accurate shadow performance

  • beautiful tonal separation

  • consistent calibration between frames

This is film digitization built for artists, archivists, and anyone who wants the absolute highest quality from their 35mm negatives.

Ultimate Quality, Reimagined.
