The Center — Colour Darkroom Orientation + Access Certification

Course overview

A three-hour, instructor-led orientation and hands-on workshop designed to prepare participants for safe, independent use of The Center.

Class capacity

Maximum four participants. Each participant uses their own Colour enlarger during the course.

What participants will learn

• Safe, independent workflow in The Center’s Colour darkroom.
• Colour enlarger setup, negative handling, focusing and composition.
• Exposure tests, colour filtration, print evaluation and basic corrections.
• Safe RA-4 processor use, equipment-care and end-of-session procedures.

What is included

• Instructor-led orientation and hands-on practice.
• Use of one Colour enlarger per student.
• RA-4 chemistry and processor use during the class.
• Twenty-five sheets of Colour photographic paper per student.
• Equipment and facility use during the course.
• Manual Colour Darkroom Access review after successful completion.

What to bring

Bring one suitable developed negative you would like to print. A practice negative may be provided when needed.

How Access approval works

Purchasing or attending this course does not automatically grant Darkroom Access. Access is granted only after a Graination staff member confirms that the participant can use the facility safely and independently.

Independent Colour darkroom sessions cannot be booked until the corresponding Access permission has been approved on the participant’s Graination account.

Booking calendar

Select an available course date in the booking calendar. Graination staff can add future and recurring dates from the product’s Availability settings.

Important policies and prerequisites

• Each attendee must sign in and book one personal, non-transferable seat using their own Graination account. Guest checkout and multiple unnamed seats are not permitted.
• No existing Darkroom Access permission is required to take this course.
• Participants must follow instructor directions and all posted safety, chemical-handling, equipment-care and facility rules.

Cancellation and rescheduling

You may cancel or request one transfer to another available course date up to 48 hours before the scheduled start time. A timely cancellation is eligible for a full refund of the course price and applicable tax to the original payment method. Use My Account → Bookings to cancel; contact Graination before the same deadline to request a transfer. Transfers are subject to availability and are not confirmed until Graination sends confirmation.

Cancellations or transfer requests received less than 48 hours before the scheduled start time, and failure to attend, are non-refundable and are not eligible for a complimentary transfer. Graination may review exceptional circumstances individually.

Arrival and late entry

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes early for check-in at The Center, BSMT-204 Spadina Ave, Toronto. Safety instruction begins at the scheduled start time. Late admission is at the instructor’s discretion and does not extend the course. A participant who arrives more than 15 minutes late, or who misses safety-critical instruction, may be unable to join or complete the course; the booking will then be treated as a late cancellation or no-show.

If Graination changes a course

Graination may need to reschedule or cancel because of insufficient enrollment, instructor unavailability, equipment or facility issues, safety concerns, or circumstances outside reasonable control. If Graination cancels a course or changes its date or time and the new time does not work for you, you may choose a transfer to another available date or a full refund of the course price and applicable tax.

Access assessment

The course fee pays for instruction, materials and participation; it does not purchase or guarantee Access. If Access is not approved after a fully delivered course, the fee is not refundable solely for that reason. Graination will explain the areas that require more practice and the available next steps.
